Smithsonian Museum honours Bruce Onobrakpeya

(File)Lagos - Renowned artist Bruce Onobrakpeya was recently honoured by the Smithsonian National Museum of African Arts in Washington DC, reports Premium Times

The artist was named the Artist Honouree on the occasion of the Museum’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

President Goodluck Jonathan sent a congratulatory message to the 82 year old professor his spokesperson, Reuben Abati.

Onobrakpeya is  a recipient of the UNESCO Living Human Treasure Award in 2006, for his works in the State House Collection currently on display in the presidential villa.

He was a member of the Zaria Art Society where he  fused colonial art practice with traditional art-forms and philosophy.

The octogenarian who holds the Harmattan workshop every year has been a catalyst as well as a mentor and inspiration to generations of artists.
